MFCU gives back this Holiday Season

Each year, as the holiday season approaches, many families and communities take the time to donate to their favorite charities, volunteer to purchase and wrap gifts for those in need, or find other ways to give back to their community. The holiday months also inspire credit unions to go above and beyond. At Members First, we are proud to say that we are committed to the industry principle of “concern for community” year round.

Helping the people that reside in our local communities is tied very closely to the roots of credit unions. When the Federal Credit Union Act was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934, it was done so on the premise that credit unions would fulfil the mission of “people helping people” in the financial industry. Since then, credit unions have stepped up to the plate to value service over profit.

As perhaps one of the most important and prominent credit union operating principles, “concern for community” is the way in which credit unions contribute to their communities, through both donations and volunteerism. After all, happy and healthy communities means happy and healthy credit union members.


The Community Difference Project

At Members First, our Community Difference Project (CDP) is our designated give-back program. The CDP was founded in 2011 and has grown exponentially over the years. Through our Community Difference Project, Members First sponsors teams and events, donates to our local food pantries, volunteers with regional humane societies, distributes random acts of kindness around town, and the list goes on. To be an employee of the credit union means that volunteer opportunities are abundant and encouraged.

During the holidays, our CDP outings often involve partnering with seasonal programs put on by local nonprofit organizations, such as purchasing gifts for the Salvation Army and United Way’s Sharing Tree program.



Although the credit union is dedicated to its concern for our communities all year long, our holiday adopt-a-family program is inspired by the holidays. Every year since 2002, staff donations are collected through employee jean days and potluck competitions. All proceeds are used to shop for Christmas gifts for families who need a little extra help during the holiday season. Each MFCU branch location participates by adopting their own families to assist from our Sharing Tree. While the adopt-a-family program is not the only charitable giving that MFCU employees are involved in, it is one of the most fulfilling. Our staff (and members!) look forward all year to being involved in the process— from collecting donations, to purchasing gifts, to meeting each family—everyone finds a way to help out.

As Mary, an employee from our Wackerly location says, “The excitement when the tags are placed on the tree is so heartwarming. When our fellow co-workers and members swarm the tree to find the perfect tag to shop for it is simply amazing”.


As we begin to wrap up the year, many of us are eager to close the door on the challenging year that lies behind us. We hope that you have been positively impacted by the credit union difference this year and that our services will continue to help you in the future.
