Members First is Celebrating International Credit Union Day!

Authored By: Kristen Williamson on 10/18/2022

In 1864, the very first financial cooperative was founded in Germany. As Europe endured harsh economic times, a group of workers pooled their finances together seeking safe and affordable financial products for underserved people.

This seemingly small, kind act between community members became the foundation of the credit union movement! Thanks in great part to their cooperative spirit, there are now over 86,000 credit unions in operation in 118 countries.

Now that is something to celebrate, right?

Beginning in 1948, International Credit Union Day is celebrated each year in October in order to honor our credit union members, reflect upon the success of the credit union movement, and spread awareness about the credit union difference.

This year, ICU Day takes place on Thursday, October 20th and we hope that you will be joining Members First in the celebration!

All eleven of our branches will be serving donuts and cider to our members. Whether you need to conduct credit union business or you just drop in to say hello, we hope to see you to at a branch to enjoy a treat.

Also on October 20th, we will be bringing the celebration out into our communities. Be sure to keep an eye out for MFCU team members dropping into local businesses to deliver treats and spread credit union cheer!

On October 20th and 21st, we will be hosting a "Pumpkin Decorating Contest" on the Members First Facebook page. All pumpkins up for voting were decorated by our staff, and voting will be done by those who visit our Facebook page and participate. Visit to check out our pumpkins and cast a vote!

Finally, each of our Little Free Libraries will be stocked with new children’s books about money, saving, and other financial education topics. Click here to learn more about our branch libraries!

This year’s ICU Day theme is “Empower Your Financial Future with a Credit Union”. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions are mission driven organizations that exist to serve their member owners. Our members futures are of upmost importance to us not only today, but all year. If you are interested in learning more about International Credit Union Day, click here.
