Merger FAQs

  • What is the purpose of the merger?

    • A vision from both Board of Directors asking for a higher level of convenience for the membership, as well as more robust products and services. From that has come the combining of two strong credit unions.

    • Our credit unions values and attributes are aligned. Both organizations are founded on and share a mutual commitment to our members, employees and communities of Michigan.  We take pride in our expertise in offering financial services and we share a unified commitment to deliver the best credit union experience.

    • Diversifies our membership base and economic footprint to open new opportunities.

  • Why is this good for members?

    • Beyond a healthy, diverse and strong credit union, benefits of the merger to you will be:

      • A branch and ATM network of eleven convenient locations across the state of Michigan; you will be able to do business in the greater central Michigan area

      • The same employees that you are used to seeing, and in some cases, more employees, who are all committed to your success by promising to be trustworthy, caring, and enthusiastic

      • Economies of scale that will continue to keep savings and loan rates competitive

      • Expanded services as well as enhanced savings and lending products

      • Increased confidence for you in the financial strength of your credit union

      • Diversification of our locations and markets to ensure the strength and longevity of the credit union

  • When will the merger officially take place?

    • The merger will be official on August 1, 2017.  The FEDCOM branches will close at the end of day on July 31 and reopen on August 3, 2017 as the combined credit union.

  • Will the credit union’s name change?

    • The continuing credit union’s name will be Members First Credit Union.

  • Will any of the branches be closed or consolidated?

    • No. We have no plans to close any branches. You can be assured that we will, as always, focus on member convenience and on retaining the best business practices and services.

  • Will the business hours be changed?

    • The business hours will continue to remain the same until further notice.

  • Will any employees lose their job?

    • No.  All team members are needed for the combined credit union.  In fact, there will be improved benefits and career advancement opportunities for credit union employees; making us a preferred employer throughout Michigan.

  • Will I have to change my account number?

    • The overwhelming majority of members will keep their current FEDCOM account number.  No Members First Credit Union members will have to change their account number.  All members will be provided specific account level information well before the planned systems conversion and merger date.

  • How large will the merged credit union be?

    • The combined credit union will be approximately $475 million in assets, with 58,000 members and 200 employees.

  • How will this benefit the employees?

    • When two motivated credit unions join together for the benefit of its members, the result is a combined organization that creates new and exciting opportunities to all stakeholders. The combination will lead to new areas of career development, growth opportunities, and earning power. As we continue to empower our employees to serve our members, increased enjoyment of their purpose will continue.

  • How do the cultures of the two credit unions compare?

    • Our credit unions values and attributes are aligned. Both organizations are founded on and share a mutual commitment to our members, employees and communities of Michigan.  We take pride in our expertise in offering financial services and we share a unified commitment to deliver the best credit union experience.

  • How will the integration of the two credit unions be managed?

    • Both credit unions have been collaborating to develop a well-defined process for managing the integration.  Beyond the continued daily service to members, the merger is top priority.  Systems, policies, accounts, teams, branches, training, member communication, etc. are all being considered.  The teams are excited and confident about combining the best practices of both credit unions.

  • What do I do if I have further questions regarding the merger?

    • All members will receive an information packet including transition information regarding their various account changes prior to the planned conversion date. The packet will include detailed instructions regarding your accounts, online banking access, and contact information.  Please take the time to read through all materials that are sent to you.
