Members First Credit Union Celebrates ICU Day
Authored By: Katie Stoeckle on 10/19/2017

On October 19, Members First Credit Union will, along with more than 56,000 credit unions around the world, celebrate International Credit Union Day (ICU Day), and the philosophy and achievements of the credit union movement.

Today, please enjoy doughnuts and cider and/or coffee at our branches! We are also holding a drawing for the grand prize of a $25 Visa gift card, ICU Day giveaways and MFCU items.

Members First Credit Union celebrates ICU Day because it believes the not-for-profit structure and people-first principles of credit unions make them the ideal financial partners for all people. This year’s ICU Day theme is “Dreams Thrive Here,” a celebration of how credit unions help people achieve their biggest goals in life.

The public is welcome to stop by any MFCU branch and celebrate with a worldwide movement that’s made helping people its No. 1 priority for more than 160 years.

The 4 Biggest Credit Union Myths
Authored By: Mara Simanskey on 10/18/2017

The 4 Biggest Credit Union Myths

With International Credit Union Day almost here, we’d like to clear up the four biggest myths about credit unions.

  1. They aren’t big enough.

There are big and small credit unions, but just like banks, your deposits at a credit union are insured by the federal government up to $250,000.

  1. It will be hard to access my money.

Credit unions have access to a network of 30,000 free ATMs and 5,000 shared branching locations, making it easy for you to access your money anywhere.

  1. I can’t join.

We proudly serve all those persons who live, work, worship, or attend school or post-high school in the following Michigan counties: Midland, Clare, Gladwin, Isabella, Gratiot, Saginaw, Bay, Osceola, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, and Allegan. Interested in joining? Visit one of our branches and be sure to bring your driver’s license or state-issued ID!

  1. They don’t offer as many perks as banks.

Credit unions offer the same financial products as banks—checking accounts, debit and credit cards, online banking, IRAs (individual retirement accounts), and home and auto loans—but because they’re not-for-profit, they often offer better rates than banks. We also provide free notary services at every branch, night deposit boxes 24/7, and at select branches coin counting machines and safe deposit boxes.

April is National Credit Union Youth Month!
Authored By: Rachel Finney on 4/3/2017

April is National Credit Union Youth Month! Financial education is crucial, and we want to help you teach your children to give a hoot about savings!

The first step to teaching your kids about money is talking about money. The most effective way to teach is by having frequent discussions and not to lecture. Look for teachable moments and always be willing to answer questions. Sometimes parents don't want their children to worry about financial matters or think they are too young to understand, but that is not the case. So how to start the talk?

  • Ask questions. If you’re going out to eat, talk about the price difference between the options, and ask them which they would choose. If they select the more expensive, talk through what you might have to give up later in the week.
  • Make them part of your budgeting. If you’re doing any kind of financial planning for the year, solicit input from your kids. Enlist them in your saving goals—no one watches you more closely than your kids, so they’re natural accountability partners! If you’re uncomfortable revealing too much of your financial picture, you can keep the discussions high level, but involving them makes money less abstract.
  • Open a youth savings account. This is the best way to help them to learn to save for what they find meaningful in life. A lifetime of good savings habits can start now!

For information on our Kids Club and Student Club accounts, click here!

There are many different saving habits that you can help teach your child. What kind of saver are you?

Authored By: Katie Stoeckle on 12/18/2015

Looking for an easy way to save money on last minute holiday shopping? We had one of our staff members review each of these local store apps for a month and share how each work and money savings strategies.  All of these programs are free and just require sign-up with an email address or social media account, no need to worry about having a card or checking account on file.  Save money this holiday season and beyond with some of these apps!

Meijer (mPerks)

How it works: The app for Meijer features the store’s online couponing system mPerks.  Much like paper coupons, users ‘clip’ the coupons they like to be saved to their account.  Sign up with an email address and phone number.  When at the checkout, users enter the email address and a 4-digit PIN number set up during registration.  The coupon will automatically be applied at checkout.  The program also offers rewards for meeting spending requirements in certain categories, such as fresh meat or electronics.

Pros: Coupons can be clipped on a variety of different products, including groceries, clothing, electronics, housewares and more.  mPerks also includes a shopping list feature to find and remember each product.

Cons: Sometimes a coupon might not ring up properly, even when the user does everything right.  In that case, just take your purchases to the Customer Service desk, explain the situation and show them your clipped coupon in the app and product purchased.  They will almost always credit users back with the payment method used for purchase.

Walmart (Savings Catcher)

How it works: Once an account is set up with an email address, visit the Savings Catcher icon in the Walmart app. When your Walmart shopping trip is complete, scan the QR code at the bottom of the receipt.  Over the next 2-3 days the app will checks the prices you paid with all the local stores that it can find (it can display up to 20 competitors in the local area).  If the app shows a lower price at a competing store, it will add up the difference, which can be redeemed for eGift cards.

Pros: Since Walmart has a price match guarantee, the savings catcher is basically a way to do this, yet saves time so users do not have to compare items at different stores.  Also, users can redeem eGift cards for any amount, there is no minimum required.

Cons: Value pack or sale items may not register at other stores, so it is difficult for the app to find the lower price and credit the user.

Target (Cartwheel)

How It Works:  Target shoppers can add “offers" to their accounts, and have the cashier scan the app’s barcode at checkout to receive the discount.  Offers range from food and home to clothing and toys.  The app also offers ‘for you’ based on previously added offers.

Pros: Offers are easy to clip and understand the terms.  The Cartwheel app also has this feature where users can scan the barcode of a product to see if an offer exists, and then clip it.

Cons:  There is a limit to how many offers that can be clipped at a time.  However, if certain ‘badges’ are completed, users can open up more spots for offers.

Each of these apps may have special promotions running during the holiday season, like 50% off toy offers in the Cartwheel app or SantaBucks at Meijer, but can be a great savings strategy all year long!  Don’t forget about the MFCU app for 24/7 access to your account anytime, anywhere!

*These reviews were compiled from 100% personal experience and the reviewer was in no way compensated for their thoughts on the app, products or stores.

We love to hate Secure Acces Codes, Part 2.
Authored By: Cathleen Louisignau on 7/7/2015

We are improving the level of security for Online Banking by changing the URL you access your account from. We are not referring to www.mfcu.net – that will remain the same. The URL after you attempt to log into Online Banking is what will be relocated.

How will this affect you?
The new URL will be a different destination for the devices you access your account through. In order to access your account, you will be required to reconfirm your Multi-Factor Authentication and register all the devices you use to login to your Online Banking account.

If you have bookmarked the Online Banking page in your browser, it will no longer take you directly to the login page. Simply visit mfcu.net to set up a new bookmark. You will still be able to visit www.mfcu.net or use your mobile app to login to your account – after you re-register your device by obtaining and inputting a Secure Access Code.

How can you be prepared?
Please make sure that your Secure Delivery Preferences are up-to-date in our system. This will make the Multi-Factor Authentication process smoother and get you into your account quicker. To learn how to do so, please refer to the blog post We Love to Hate Secure Access Codes.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to make upgrades to our products and services. We understand security is your top priority and we hope you feel that these changes are helping protect your financial information.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 855.835.6328 and a Member Service Representative will help walk you through the MFA process.

Through the membership survey, you told us that safety of your financial information is your top priority. In order to continuously provide exceptional security, we need your help in ensuring your contact information you’ve provided within your Online Banking profile is up-to-date.

Keeping this information up-to-date is very important and easy to do directly from your Online Banking account.

Updating your Contact Info within Online Banking

We've saved our members, WHAT?! 10/21/2014

At the beginning of the year we rallied our employees to embrace an improved lending culture, with an overall goal of saving our members $1 million in 2014. In only six short months, we were able to do just that. As we celebrated the success back in June, we decided we couldn't stop at one million, setting a second goal to save you $2 million by the end of the year! So far this year we've saved our members $1,769,307!

We have millions to lend and are eager to provide you a solution for your financial needs. Members are saving thousands on interest rates, trimming years off their payments and improving their financial well-being.

We look forward to celebrating our success with you again as soon as we reach our second goal!

MFCU Lives United! 10/13/2014

Our employees live our mission of Making a Positive Difference through our service promises and giving back to our communities. Every year, we support our local United Ways in the 6 counties we serve.

This year, we dedicated the entire month of October to United Way. Our staff gave individual gifts, our members and communities supported fundraisers at each branch and staff members had fun competing in chili cook-offs, t-shirts sales and other creative fundraisers they came up with to support the cause.

We've always had a strong support for United Way, but this year we set the bar even higher - raising 32% more than we did last year, with a grand total of $18,441! We had tremendous support from our staff with 80% making a personal donation and 12 staff members joined Young Leaders United; showing their support financially while volunteering throughout the year as well.

Making a Positive Difference Week
Authored By: Cathleen Louisignau on 6/23/2014

To celebrate the success of saving our members $1 million, we came up with the idea of having a celebration day at all of our branches. Branches served hot dogs, doughnuts and coffee, gourmet popcorn, candy and cupcakes as they spent the day celebrating with each member who stopped by the branch that day.

As we developed our plan to celebrate, we realized we were missing a huge part of what makes our credit union run - our communities. As a part of the Community Difference Project, we came up with the idea to celebrate not only for one day, but for the entire week! Our staff enjoyed doing random acts of kindness all throughout their communities. We gave away gas cards, purchased people's groceries, paid for lunches and many other things that made a positive impact for our community members.

We look forward to saving our members even more money this year and celebrating again when we reach our second goal, two million dollars!
